Manchester District Music Archive

Great site with loads of cool informative stuff regarding Manchester and its music. What makes this site so great is the fact that it requires participation from us “Joe Public” and there are some great features like the timeline and artefacts sections among others, check it out…

Absolutely loving the film Black Swan which even for non-ballet lovers like me does make you appreciate what a fine skill it is!!! The film is beautifully shot and has some brilliant surreal, fantastical moments (but I’m going to do a more detailed breakdown in my reviews section).
Speaking with a student the other day Rickie about Black Swan he urged me to watch this Little White Lies Magazine mini-film about how they put together their Black Swan edition and I think everyone should see it as it is fantastic. The pacing to the music and what tey are actually doing in the film from a design perspective is brilliant, especially my favourite little bit where someone is creating a broken glass style font (see image above) which has a reference relating back to a pivotal scene in the film (which for those who haven’t seen it i won’t give away!!!)
Anyway follow the link and enjoy…

As always the ever fantastic Google have come up with something to look at before you go off surfing the web! To celebrate the 183rd birthday of celebrated author Jules Verne they have created an interactive piece from 20, 000 Leagues under the sea which allows the user to scroll an illustrated underwater image using a joystick (see the screenshot below!) whatever will they come up with next…

p.s. no point putting the link up think you all know the google address by now and this will possibly be gone when some read this anyway!

Time

Thought the quote below was quite apt as haven’t had the chance to blog for a while and just like the the gym once you get out of the habit it’s very hard to get going again!

Anyhow just thought I would post that it is time for the Islington Mill Annual Craft Fair, which is well worth a visit. Can’t go this year unfortunately which I’m disappointed about but I would encourage anyone else to see it.

Its amazing what you can find in the most random of places! Took my family to a miniature railway called KirkLees Light Railway near Wakefield and happened upon these old style advertising posters (on metal sheet) for products, these had obviously been up a long time as they were quite weather worn and had lost colour but the artistry was still there. Those old school artists sure could illustrate nicely by hand (though I’m guessing these aren’t actually the originals).

It made for an interesting aside while waiting for the train enjoy…

An even better summary of the visiting speaker today by Tash…

tashatime:

http://www.gemmacorrell.com/

Gemma Corell visited today, I’m afraid sans Mr Pickles the Pug. She gave a talk and a look into how to promote yourself in that there big wide world. Promotion being the key word, Gemma reaches out a web of zines, colabs, blogs, day diarys, fashion spots and general getting her name out there. In her own words she was not the most talented in her class- but what she has got is a passion for her subject and a productive and outreaching nature… she gave some great suggestions that could be taken on board by illustrators and and designers alike.

so on that note heres a couple she mentioned and a load I always rattle on about in the hope people listen…
